Why Organic Food
Are you worried about the chemicals that may be in your foods? Many people are very concerned about the growing levels of chemicals in our fresh foods. Pesticides and chemical fertilizers that are used in farming end up in and on the foods that are purchased from our local grocery store as well as in the foods we're consuming while eating out.
Would proper washing of the produce bought be enough? Well, some experts say it's not enough and recommends going for organic foods instead. If you read any book about detoxification you'll find advices that recommend you to opt for organic foods whenever possible. Some analysts have even claimed that organic foods have far higher nutritional values than the same foods grown with pesticides.
What does Organic mean?
Organic food is grown without the use of conventional pesticides, artificial fertilizers, human waste, sewage sludge and other genetically engineered substances. In order to declare that foods are organic, a food grower has to submit to a certification process. Organic farming significantly reduces external inputs by avoiding the use of chemo-synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and pharmaceuticals.
Processed organic food usually contains only organic ingredients, or where there are a number of ingredients, at least a minimum percentage of the plant and animal ingredients must be organic. Any non-organically produced ingredients must still meet requirements. It must be free of artificial food additives, and is often processed with fewer artificial methods, materials and conditions.
Some foods are being labeled 'Certified Naturally Grown' but this is not the same as being certified as organic ? in the US, look for the eUSDA Organic' label. There are also cases where foods are labeled 'Made with Organic Ingredients' ? so be sure to check out the small print to understand exactly what they are claiming.
Organic foods are generally more expensive and can take a toll on the family food budget. Even so, prices for organic foods have come down recently and this can only encourage more to consume organic food. Those who follow a more natural diet feel that the additional costs are well worth the associated benefits and better long term health.
Where can you find Organic foods?
Because of the growing concern for manufactured foods and the increasing acceptance by the general public for organic foods, most grocery stores now have an Organic section in their produce departments. Even large supermarket chains like Wal-Mart are on board with offering organic foods. You will likely to find the best deals on organic foods at your local farmer's market.
If you can't find organic foods, or you find you aren't able to make them fit into your food budget, it's not the end. The best alternative is to wash thoroughly all of your produce just before eating by running them under water and scrubbing the skin gently to remove dirt or residue. Use a vegetable brush if necessary. Be sure to also wash melons and bananas ? though you won't eat the skin. This is because most people tends to eat them without washing and it is easy to transfer germs from the outside to the inside during preparation and serving. Another option is to detox your body to get rid of the toxins accumulated in your body after a while.
By the way ? the same is true for organic produce. You must still always wash them before eating.
