The Importance of Antioxidants
The food that we consume contains some substances which are called antioxidants that prevent the oxidative deterioration of our body. These antioxidants are found in some foods and consuming them is very good for our health. The antioxidants neutralize the free radicals which can be very harmful for the body due to their adverse affects on the DNA, which may cause cancer, diabetes, macular degeneration, heart disease and many other health related issues. Taking food containing that has antioxidants helps in making the body resistant to diseases. Having antioxidant rich food is extremely important because recently a study was conducted where it showed that antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables reduced the chances of having a stroke by twenty five percent.
Now let us look at how antioxidants help
Antioxidants are kind of neutralizers that deactivate the free radicals and
thereby preventing the affects of free radicals which include affecting the DNA
and which in turn causes a lot of other bodily problems. These free radicals are
produced when the oxygen is taken up by the cells of the body. Another source of
this particle is pollutants in the air like cigarette smoke and exhaust fumes of
vehicles.
Antioxidants are of different types
It is vital to have antioxidants in our diet but if the diet is lagging of it
then taking multi vitamin supplements should be considered although there is no
saying that supplements can replace the antioxidants received from the food
consumed. The type of antioxidants that should be present in the diet is beta
carotene, selenium, vitamin E and vitamin C. They can be found in grain
products, vegetables specially beans, fruits etc.
Antioxidant rich foods
As already told that selenium, beta carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E are found
abundantly in most food so be sure to take healthy consumption of the minerals
and vitamins required by the body. Some foods in which these are found
abundantly are given in the following:
Selenium: seafood, poultry, whole grains, onions, garlic, wheat germ and Brazil
nuts.
Beta carotene: carrots, the color of carrots depend on the carotene and you can
probably see the similarity in the names too. Other food items are mangoes,
sweet potatoes, broccoli, red and yellow peppers and various other veggies and
fruits.
Vitamin C: citrus fruits like lemon, oranges, grapefruits, tomatoes, green
veggies that are dark in color, red pepper, yellow pepper, green pepper etc.
Vitamin E: dark leafy veggies, legumes, whole grains, brown rice, nuts,
vegetable oils etc.
Apart from the food mentioned here antioxidants are found in most of the light colored fruits and vegetables, so take care to have them in your diet. Also try not to expose you self too much in excessive heat and stay away from cigarette smoke.
