Detox Diet 101
Detox has become one of the most used words in the health industry over the past couple of years and for good reason. It is the key to healthy living and survival in the era of fast foods.
When feelings of constant exhaustion start to take on a pattern in your life, when you feel the need to shed a couple of kiloís or youíve overindulged on certain foods, leaving you feeling tired and miserable, it might very well be time for you to consider a detox diet.
During a detoxification process, your body will rid itself of toxins Ė the main cause of your constant low energy levels and inability to loose weight. Your liver is the bodyís own detox machine, but with all the toxins we ingest every day, this machine get overworked and under performs. You need to clean it, whether itís by means of exercise or a spa treatments, you can always help the process by going on a proper detox diet.
A detox diet is not just a once off simple diet, although there are many forms of detoxifying. Detox is a lifestyle. Subtle changes to your way of living that has a huge impact on your health. By minimizing your chemical intake with the option to choose organic foods can be a good start. Toxins prevent your liver from function at optimum level and by reducing your intake of toxins, your liver will be able to digest fat and cleanse your body naturally. To aid your liver, opt for high fibre foods, fresh organic fruit and vegetables, beans, nuts and plenty of water. Cut down on sugar, refined foods, caffeine and alcohol.
Why would detox work for you? With our fast paced lifestyles, we tend to eat more fast food and less healthy home cooked meals. Fast foods contain a very high fat percentage and very few nutrients. They are often high in fat soluble chemicals that are foreign to your body and gets stored as fat tissue when your liver cannot break it down due to all the toxins itís already fighting. This results in your body going into slow mode causing you to feel tired, irritated, hormonal and ill. Your skin suffers, your metabolism slows down and you start to look and feel unhealthy.
Changing your lifestyle and doing a regular detox, your energy will improve, your skinís natural glow will return, your concentration will improve and so also your metabolism, increasing your energy and burning fat.
Depending on your situation and the state of your health, care should be taken when pregnant or breastfeeding, as a strict detox can be detrimental to the health of the mother and the baby. Itís always a good idea to consult your doctor if you suffer from heart disease, anaemia or any blood related disease, cancer, high/low blood pressure, alcohol dependency syndrome, drug related problems etc.
Important things to know about detoxifying
Side effects commonly occur with the detox process as your body starts to clear itself. This is normal. Drink plenty of water to assist your body in the detoxification process almost like rinsing it clean. Not everyone will experience the same effects while on a detox as our bodies respond in different ways. The first symptom to appear is usually a mild throbbing headache, followed by tiredness as jour body is adjusting to the new routine. A good idea is to start your detox on a Friday to give your body time over the weekend to rest and adjust. Other symptoms include diarrhoea, restlessness and sleeplessness.
Unless your detox is a lifestyle change like cutting down on alcohol and cigarette, do not continue for longer than 3 days. Try to cleanse your body three to four times a year with the changes of the season.
Before jumping into a really hectic detox, make sure to consult your doctor or health specialist. Read as much as you can about a specific detox diet and avoid not eating at all. Some detox diets can be a really bad experience and do much worse for your health than good. Read reviews about it and make sure you choose the one thatís right for you.
